'The Stand' as our small village is known, comprises only fourteen houses on either side of the main road - the A73. There are divided ideas of its origins but we prefer either of the two:

The first being a resting place or 'stand', between two Roman Fortresses, in this case Castlecary about 6 miles north and Bothwell, 5 miles south.
Or a local farmer, a Mr Lindsay - a Covenanter of Staun Farm across from the house - was captured and hanged after the battle of Bothwell Brig. He had been hiding but then made his 'stand' against his enemies at this spot.
